Input > Intake > Output

Input > Memorization > Output

Input > Reciting Words > Output

Input > Mechanical Memory > Output

Mechanical input > Mechanical Memory > Mechanical output

My reflection: The above is a description of the mechanical process of English language learning from input through memory to output.

It is not only the reality but also the tragedy of our English language learning and teaching.

Both our students and teachers are helpless and hopeless in this mechanical process of English language learning.

We must ask ourselves, both teachers and students included:

Where is the way out? (敢问路在何方?)

What is the way out? (试问出路何在?)

My inquiry into these two questions leads me to my commitment and devotion to the enterprise of the research on the development of our integrated cognitive competence.

My commitment and devotion further leads me to my determination to reconsider the direction of English language learning in response to ‘Where is the way out?’ and leads me to my pursuit in exploring the approaches to English language learning in response to ‘What is the way out?’

My initial blueprint is to reformulate the route description of English language learning stepwise as follows:

Step 1. Input > ? > Output

Step 2. Input > Thinking > Output

\/

Step 3: Input > Creative thinking > Output

\/

Step 4: Input through critical reading and listening > Creative thinking > Output

\/

Step 5: Input through critical reading and listening > Creative thinking > Output with outcomes of both the critical input and the creative thinking
