Get ready: There's a new Grand Theft Auto game about to roll out this week, and we're probably in for a burst of discussion about violent video play.
	I've never found it likely that bloody video games cause bad behavior in kids, but then again, I'd also never pass any of my old copies of the games to a child. So I'm a little unsure about how to react to a recent study showing that the game is more popular than any other among 12- to 14-year-old boys. "GTA IV" is almost inevitably going to be one of the biggest game releases in a year that is already looking like a prosperous one for the industry. Market research firm NPD said that Americans expect to spend less on entertainment this year, yet they're also going to spend more than ever on video games. Video game sales jumped 57 percent in March, compared with the same month last year, according to the firm.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise is practically an industry unto itself. Electronic Arts has attempted a hostile takeover of the game's publisher this year with an offer valued at $2 billion. One analyst has even speculated that the new game could dampen opening weekend ticket sales for "Iron Man," the comic-book-inspired action movie starring Robert Downey Jr. The film premieres a few days after the game's release.
Grand Theft Auto is rated "M" but it's 12-to-14-year-olds' favorite. (Rockstar Games) Like its predecessors, Grand Theft Auto IV is rated "M" (for "Mature"), and stores are only allowed to sell it to folks ages 17 and up. The game industry's ratings board has even spelled out the types of content that could make parents squirm. The game, to be released Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, hits all the hot buttons: It contains "blood," "intense violence," "partial nudity," "strong language," "strong sexual content" and "use of drugs and alcohol." The game's developer, Rockstar, has mostly kept quiet about the storylines of its latest game, set in Liberty City, a satirical version of New York City. Previous installments of the best-selling games have all followed the paths of young strivers who go from rags to riches, building careers as gangster kingpins. On the way, there tend to be a few zillion explosions, flattened pedestrians and rival gangs that need to get squeezed out. Rockstar did not respond to requests for comment last week. But one of the game's writers, Lazlow Jones, who has also appeared as a radio deejay in the games, spoke on a local D.C. radio station this past week and put it as plainly as possible that the game is "too intense" for kids: "If you let your child play this game, you're a bad parent," he said. "The thing is, Rockstar does not want kids playing this game." By Jones's definition, it looks like there are some, ahem, "bad parents" out there, at least according to that recent survey of 12- to 14-year-olds on this subject. The authors' research team asked 1,250 kids to name some video games they'd played in the past six months. GTA was at the top of the list for boys, way ahead of the Madden football games and Microsoft's sci-fi blockbuster, Halo. Among girls the same age, the game was No. 2, behind the Sims. But here's the not-so-terrible news, according to the study's architects: Even if your kid does play the game . . . well, it might not warp him or her for life. The study was conducted by a husband-and-wife team who are co-founders of the Center for Mental Health and Media and serve on the psychiatry faculty of Harvard Medical School. The findings are published in their new book, titled "Grand Theft Childhood." Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl K. Olson say that although some studies have claimed to show a link between video games and violent or aggressive behavior, most research in this area has been flawed. Some studies dating back to the '80s looked at now-vintage arcade games that don't remotely resemble modern video games. Some studies followed the behavior of only a few dozen kids. Many of the studies don't define what constitutes violent or aggressive behavior, and many confuse short-term and long-term behavior. You'll sometimes see kids coming out of an action movie making kung fu moves against one another, said Kutner, as an example of the type of thinking behind some of the studies they looked at. STEVE JOBS, Apple’s chief executive and field general, has Napoleonic dreams of global conquest for his 10-month-old wonder gadget, the iPhone. So it may be fitting that he’s encountering his most serious resistance in a city called Waterloo.
	That is where, 70 miles west of Toronto in Ontario, 19 nondescript, low-rise office buildings comprise the headquarters of Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry. R.I.M. is the North American leader in building smartphones, those versatile handsets that operate more like computers than phones. But R.I.M. may have trouble dominating the market’s next phase. Once the exclusive domain of e-mail-obsessed professionals, smartphones are now prized by consumers who want easy access to the Web, digital music and video even more than an omnipresent connection to their in-boxes.
Since the iPhone went on sale last summer, amid long lines of shoppers and media adulation, the contours of the smartphone market have begun to shift rapidly toward consumers. An industry once characterized by brain-numbing acronyms and droning discussions about enterprise security is now defined by buzz around handset design, video games and mobile social networks.
That means R.I.M., which has historically viewed big corporations and wireless carriers as its bedrock customers, needs to alter its DNA in a hurry. While business is booming in Waterloo, analysts are raising an important question about R.I.M.’s future: Can a company that defined mobile e-mail for a generation of thumb-jockeys with bad posture also dominate the new consumer market for smartphones? “The vultures are circling,” says Roger L. Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, a research firm in Wayland, Mass. “There is this sense that the R.I.M. franchise is under assault.” In the short term, Apple’s noisy entrance into the smartphone market has elevated the visibility of smartphones and enhanced the prospects of most of its rivals. Worldwide, smartphone shipments jumped 60 percent in the last three months of 2007 over the same period the previous year, according to IDC, the tracking firm. Of the two billion cellphones sold last year, nearly 125 million were smartphones — a share that analysts expect to inexorably grow. R.I.M. added 6.5 million subscribers in its last fiscal year, twice the previous year’s amount, and its stock hit the stratosphere, more than doubling in value as investors anticipated the coming Age of the Smartphone. And R.I.M. has already introduced catchy mainstream gadgetry. The BlackBerry Pearl and Curve, two phones aimed explicitly at the consumer market, have sold well, particularly during the holiday season, and now account for a majority of R.I.M.’s device sales. But there are also signs that R.I.M. faces steeper challenges. At the end of last year, BlackBerry had a 40 percent share of the United States smartphone market, down from 45 percent at the end of 2006, thanks largely to the 17.4 percent share the iPhone grabbed in its first six months. In March, Mr. Jobs announced that Apple would take the rare step of licensing Microsoft’s corporate e-mail technology, to allow iPhones to connect directly to business computers — a dagger aimed at the heart of R.I.M.’s strength in the corporate market. In Apple’s quarterly conference call last week, Apple executives said that one-third of Fortune 500 companies were interested in giving iPhones to their employees. Apple, meanwhile, in an effort to further increase its appeal to consumers, is also expected to introduce a new 3G version of the iPhone in June, which will work on speedier wireless networks and may further attract a new segment of customers to the iPhone in the United States and abroad. In describing the threat that Apple poses to R.I.M., Charlie Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Company, describes his wife’s entirely common use of the iPhone, which she takes to bed with her each night to browse the Web. “Some consumers who might have considered the BlackBerry, who don’t have the e-mail urgency of a mobile professional, are going to start selecting the iPhone,” Mr. Wolf says. “This isn’t going to stop R.I.M., but it is going to slow them down.” ......................

FCC Fines Retailers Over TV Transition The FCC has fined eleven retailers over $6 million dollars for violations for violating rules about selling TVs that won't work after the digital TV transition.
	The Federal Communications Commission has handed out more than $6 million in fines (PDF) to retailers and two television suppliers for violating rules about labeling and importing televisions that won't work after the United States' digital television transition on February 17, 2009. The retailers were cited for failing to properly label analog-only TVs, while the suppliers were cited for importing analog-only TV after an FCC deadline.
Retailers Sears and K-Mart got the stiffest fines of almost $1.1 million apiece; Wal-Mart came in second with $992,000, while Circuit City managed third place with $712,000. Other penalized retailers include Fry's, Target, Target, Best Buy, CompUSA.
The FCC had mandated that 25-inch or larger televisions imported into the U.S. after July 1, 2006, had to have digital tuners; Syntax-Brillian and Precor were filed $1.27 million and $357,900 for importing analog-only TVs after that date. The FCC also fined Polaroid and Proview Technology $775,000 and $300,000, respectively, for shipping television receivers that can't use V-Chip technologies. The FCC said it had also reached settlements with seven other electronics manufacturers for possible violations of V-Chip DTV regulations, including Panasonic, Matsushita, and the North American arm of Philips Electronics.

The ‘apple theory’ is the topic in the latest federal application against the GreenNYC campaign logo. Several newspapers reported that Apple Inc. doesn’t like the idea of New York City officials using an apple as a logo for their eco-friendly campaign due to a resemblance to the electronics and software producer’s own logo.
	“We believe the ‘infinity apple’ design and its mission to create environmental awareness are unique and distinctive and do not infringe upon the Apple computer brand,” said Kimberly Spell of NYC & Company on Thursday. Although for a good cause, it seems that not everyone can have the apple, as the Californian company said it would only create confusion in the minds of the customers and would benefit NYC & Company only due to the level of recognition Apple has gained so far. Bloomberg News reported that Apple challenged the trademark application earlier this year, after the New York City marketing office had already filed the application in May 2007.
The controversial logo would cause “consumer confusion, resulting in damage and injury” to Apple, and “dilution of distinctiveness” of Apple’s trademark, the company said in the challenge, Bloomberg News reported.
The logo is already in use by New York campaign officials. In response to Apple’s challenge, New York City reportedly asked for the rejection of the challenge, and not only that, but they also asked for the cancelation of what now is the symbol of Apple. Quite controversial, one may think, as after all, an apple is an apple. And just as Apple believes in their apple rights, New York City might say the same thing, considering the extra 30 years of being called “The Big Apple.”

Verizon Wireless will use its preferred 4G long-term evolution (LTE) technology over the 700 MHz spectrum.
	Verizon Wireless has confirmed that it plans to use the 700 MHz spectrum it just won in the FCC broadband auction for its 4G mobile services.By: Kristin Turner Apr 3, 2008, 8:55 PM EDT Verizon Wireless paid nearly $10 billion in total for bandwidth and won the prized C-Band 700 MHz spectrum. The wireless carrier had to wait to reveal its plans with the spectrum until Thursday night, under FCC anti-collusion rules
Verizon can now confirm what many had suspected, since the deadline has passed, that it will use its preferred 4G long-term evolution (LTE) technology over the 700 MHz spectrum. The mobile services should be cleared of analog TV broadcasters by the end of February 2009.
"We will run LTE over 700 MHz," Verizon CTO Tony Melone confirmed. Melone says the operator is already in "lab trials" with early LTE technology. Sprint Nextel Corp is currently ahead of its bigger rivals in deploying proto-4G mobile WiMax networks in the United States. AT&T, the number US cellular carrier, hasn't announced any 4G plans yet. However, AT&T operator has bought in its own nationwide 700 MHz footprint through auction and acquisition. The operator spent $6.6 billion on 12 Mhz of B-Block spectrum at the recent auction and has spent nearly $10 billion all-told on filling in 700 MHz coverage across the nation. Google Inc confirmed on Thursday it had been an active bidder in recent U.S. auctions for licenses to create a national wireless network and that it will weigh in as regulators set new rules. The search engine giant also said it will weigh in on new rules the FCC may set as it re-auctions airwaves that are to be shared between public safety agencies and commercial service providers -- the "D Block" in the auctions.

Microsoft has announced that the plan for the general end of shipping Windows XP has been extended a couple of years, at least for the Windows XP Home edition. The latest plan for the end of most sales of XP was dated on June 30, 2008 but the advent of a new market of ultra low cost PCs (ULCPCs) has made Microsoft change there tune on forcing everyone onto the new Vista system.
Microsoft has just released Windows Vista SP1 which is usually a good milestone for those looking at upgrading to the next version of Windows, and is a point at which Microsoft helps push them along, but in the case of these UPCPCs, the Vista OS is just to big and expensive. The OLPC (supposed $100) XO laptop is one such machine that could still take advantage of the XP OS but would be forced to stick with Linux or look elsewhere if XP were phased out.
Due to this and probably the fact that Microsoft would like to sell a few more copies of the XP OS, they have extended the life of just the XP Home edition to June 30, 2010 which is about the time that Microsoft is expecting the successor of Windows Vista, Windows 7, to come to market. I’d be surprised to see Windows 7 on shelves by 2010 and my experience with Windows Vista so far makes me feel like I’ll still be on XP Pro in 2010, or at least until after they come out with XP SP3 which is expected by June.

A gold necklace, which now constitutes the oldest known gold object discovered in the Americas, was found near Lake Titicaca in southern Peru. The radiocarbon dating method that was used to determine its age places its origin at about 4,000 years ago.
	”The gold reflects a universal tendency for human beings to strive for prestige and status,” said study leader Dr Mark Aldenderfer of the department of anthropology at the University of Arizona, Tucson. As gold objects are usually seen as signs of well-developed societies, it now seems reasonable to suspect that the “hunter-gatherer society” of the time was in fact more advanced that originally thought. The necklace was found next to the jawbone of an adult skull in the pit at Jiskairumoko, a hamlet believed to have been settled between 3,300 and 1,500
BC, in the Lake Titicaca basin. According to researchers, it may have been worn by an adult, possibly by an elderly female. It is believed that a stone hammer was used in the making of it.
Aldenderfer’s study on this region began in 1999. The project is supposed to bring light onto the way hunting and gathering cultures approached more sedentary life styles thus creating small villages.

Yahoo has unveiled "Shine," a new Web site for women 25 to 54 focusing on information relevant to their daily lives...and enabling advertisers to target them more accurately. Internet giant Yahoo—still trying to find a way out from under Microsoft's unsolicited $40+ billion takeover attempt—has unwrapped Shine, a new lifestyle-centric site specifically aimed at women aged 25 to 54—or, as marketers like to think of them, "Chief Household Officers." The site will highlight topics related to fashion, beauty, parenting, relationships, careers, food, and health, and highlight both
	content from elsewhere in the Yahoo site network (including such stalwarts as astrology) as well as from lifestyle publishers like Conde Nast Publications, Time, and Hearst Corporation. And, of course, Shine will offer advertisers a way to more easily target adult, female Internet users. "We're executing on Yahoo's starting point strategy by ensuring that women who start their day with Yahoo are offered a more relevant experience," said head of Yahoo Media Scott Moore, in a release. "Yahoo Shine adds an important piece to our Media portfolio, which already includes sites that are number one in the News, Sports, Finance, and Entertainment categories."
